Urban Guerilla chalk activation for ‘Name your Hood’ – 1 July 2011

(Tasmin and Adin kick some pavements arse on Long Street)

Today was a prettty epic day for me.

We met in the courtyard of Cape Town train station, a handful of smiling punks with big dreams.

‘Name your Hood’, the campaign we were activating via chalk medium that day, is about encouraging the public to name the different areas of Cape Town city bowel, so that we can simultaneously express pride for our area, as well as make our city more user-friendly. The website http://www.nameyourhood.co.za boasts the phrase ‘Have your say in naming Cape Town. Make your mark. Leave a legacy.’ Which is exactly the kind of ridiculously ambitious talk I like to hear!

There were 6 of us, well 9 including Jaco Slabbert (our Urban Guerilla creative director) and our 2 very own stalkers AKA a couple of your typical trendy camera wielding city bowlers.

We attacked Long Street amongst other areas, chalking with our bare hands, knuckles dusty and raw, we were so hardcore!

We came across some CID resistance, but we danced on, our words like magic in the air, words that, like Hoodina before us, escaped even the most sticky of situations. Finally Jaco worked his charms on a lady cop, and that was the last time we got trouble from them!
